Ok, I know some might argue there is a couple missing here but I think we've pretty much got the different ways that these synthesisers create the electronic sounds we all love so much. Subtractive (my favourite), Additive, Wavetable, FM (the DX-7 is like programming MAC OSX with a calculator IMHO), Sampling, Granular and Physical Modelling. We are the music makers, and we need many possibilities to torture the ears of the poor world! And hopefully make some life changing music too (probably by a 10yr kid with a free synth app, whilst most of us spend thousands a year to feed our addiction and have racks of analog gear and never get anywhere).
But it's so much fun, and our partners love our hobby that means they rarely see us, and when they do we're still thinking about that snare that could do with a touch more snap. Oh and we can't afford Disneyland this year kids, the prophet-6 has just been released - sorry!
